The
first race was won by our resident fell race champion Stewart who then
became a victim of injuries so giving someone else a chance this year.
Race 2 saw Mark take top spot and I was third again due to Steve turning
up for just 1 race, this was the second wet evening run out to Derbyshire
hoping that no one else would turn up so my plan was obviously not
working,
Race
3 was the last chance to be able to complete the required 3 races and
Graham seized the opportunity taking first place with Mark in second and
the ever-present MV70 Frank taking my third place.
Lorraine
was the only lady contender for the second time and then took no further
part so there is no female champion this year.
Race
4 and Mark was again pushed to second by Graham and I was third again,
William experiencing his first fell race enjoyed the challenge.
Fifth
and final race Mark conceded the title to Graham and with no other
contenders I came second.
Graham
having won the 3 races he entered became HPRC Fell Race Champion 2007.
While
compiling last years 25th Anniversary edition of Running Free I
came across an article from 15 or 16 years ago when a fell championship
was suggested in order to attract more club members to the sport. It would
appear from the results above that this has not been all that successful.
I
am open to suggestions how to attract more club runners, as we have many
members who enjoy cross-country, off road running and footpath relays etc
it shows this discipline is not entirely alien.
So
what do we have to change to get you to have a go? We tried more weekend
races in 2006. Can we change the scoring, maybe handicapping, so everyone
has a more even chance of winning?
The
main thing is that this championship continues as the Paul Fooks Trophy
was presented in memory of an ‘Awesome Runner’ tragically killed in a
mountaineering accident and as such this trophy must not be allowed to
gather dust and must continue to be used in the discipline for which it
was presented.
